This was taken over the summer in the canals of Tortuguero, Costa Rica. The green basillisk lizard uses its natural camouflage to avoid being detected—luckily our canal guide had better eyes than we did.

This colossal statue stands in the middle of an 89 acre island that serves as a national memorial to the 26th president and his conservation agenda. Resting in the middle of the Potomac River, Theodore Roosevelt Island is a tranquil oasis from its urban surrounding.

This was taken over the weekend on the at the Constitution Gardens Pond on the National Mall. I was photographing this flock when it suddenly took flight right over my head. I almost forgot to turn around and take a photo.
Photo of the day: San Francisco After Dusk
This shot was taken last week after dusk from Grizzly Peak in the Berkeley Hills, a favorite spot of mine going back all the way to college. There are few locations that I find more peaceful or meaningful, and I return when ever I’m in the Bay. Actually, one of the first “good” photos that I ever took came from this same spot and helped give me the motivation to stick with photography.
This particular photo was the last shot of the night and the culmination of several photos taken before, during, and after sunset. The red skyline was much less visible in person; the result of a 15 second long exposure.
Happy New Year
For some reason today was the first day that I noticed this patch of dry grass outside my apartment door. The sun was hanging low and the light was warm. “Fresh start” came to mind when I saw it. Happy New Year.
